Since 2001 - Member of the Max Planck Society and Director at Max-Planck-Institut for Chemische Physik fester Stoffe in Dresden, several years was Managing Director of the Institute. Since 2002 - faculty member and honorary professor in chemical metal science at the Dresden University of Technology, Germany. Was awarded as Visiting professor at ENSICAEN, Caen and at the University of Rennes in France. Since 2010 - Visiting professor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Was or is Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief of Zeitschrift for Kristallographie in New Crystal Structures, member of the Editorial Boards of Zeitschrift for Kristallographie in Crystalline Materials, Journal of Alloys and Compounds, Journal of Solid State Chemistry, Science and Technology of Advanced Materials, Materials Physics Today. Was elected as Board member of the section Solid state chemistry and materials sciences of the German Chemical Society (2007-2013), Board Member of the International Thermoelectric Society (2013), Board Member of the European Thermoelectric Society (2014) and Associate Member of the International Thermoelectric Academy (2014). Author and co-author of ca. 600 scientific publications and more than 15 patents with several thousands of citations.

Professor Fan at the University of Edinburgh has his expertise in photocatalysis for environmental remediation, particulate materials processing through interdisciplinary approaches, multiphase flow in porous materials for enhancing heat and mass transfer in oil recovery, CO2 capture using solid adsorbents and solvents. He is the editorial board member of 4 international journals, and a member of Scientific Council of the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Centre, and a technical committee member for a number of international conferences. Professor Fan received the British Foundrymen Award from the Institute of British Foundrymen in 2009, and 3 awards from Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, and China Nonferrous Metals Industry Corporation. He has authored or co-authored over 170 peer reviewed publications.

Eric Dooryhee(Biography)
Eric Dooryhee has 25+ years of experience in x-ray powder diffraction. His expertise includes x-ray detectors, diffraction software and beamline optics hardware. Eric Dooryhee received both his Masters degree in Hard Condensed Matter Physics and Crystallography and his Ph.D. in Radiation Physics from the University of Paris. Prior to joining Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL, New York state) in 2009, Eric Dooryhee has been an associate physicist at the Research Center with Ions and Lasers (Caen France, 1990-95), and a senior physicist at the Neel Institute (Grenoble, France, 2001-09). Dr. Dooryhee also worked at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF-France, 1996-2000) on developing the benchmark High Resolution Powder Diffraction beamline. At present, Dr. Dooryhee manages the Diffraction & In Situ Scattering Program of the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS-II) at BNL, and is the beamline group leader for the X-ray Powder Diffraction (XPD) beamline at the NSLS-II.

Since 2010 Klaudia Hradil is the head of the X-ray center of the Technische Universitat in Vienna, Austria. She received her PhD in crystallography at the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany, in 1995. After a postdoctoral at the Hahn-Meitner institute in Berlin she worked as university assistant at the mineralogy/crystallography department of the university of Wurzburg. From 2003 she build up and runned the thermal triple axes spectrometer PUMA at the Heinz Meier-Leibnitz neuron source in Garching, Germany. She is a board member in various review panels of research neutron sources research for beam time proposals in the field of structure and inelastic neutron scattering. Furthermore, she serves as general secretary of the national committee for crystallography in Austria and the special interest group for neutron and synchrotron research within the Austrian physical society. She has been working within various fields of crystallography, condensed matter physics and material science. Besides the research work she also was intensely involved in instrument design for neutron and X-ray lab sources.

Dr. Martin Meven received his PhD in natural sciences at the Institute of Crystallography at RWTH Aachen University in 2001. Aside from his scientific work on HT superconductors during this time he gained experience in scattering methods with X-ray diffractometry including instrument development. He extended his expertise as postdoc at Munich, where he developed a new single crystal diffractometer for hot neutrons at the neutron source FRM II of the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching, Germany. Since then he has been working as instrument scientist on various topics in the fields of crystallography, solid state chemistry and solid matter physics and material sciences. He has served as a board member of various scientific conferences and scientific referee at review panels at various neutron sources in Europe. He is the speaker of the Special Interest Group on Neutron Scattering (SG # 7) of the German Society of Crystallography (DGK) and organizes workshops on neutron scattering techniques for crystallographers to young scientists on a regular basis.

Jerry L. Atwood is Curators' Distinguished Professor, University of Missouri-Columbia. He received his Ph.D. from University of Illinois in 1968. He was Professor and Chairman, University of Missouri-Columbia from 1994 to 2016. He was an Editorial board member in Journal of Chemical Crystallography (1985-1998) and Crystal Engineering (1998-2001). Since 1999 he serve as Consulting Editor for Journal of Chemical Crystallography. Andrzej Grzechnik has completed his PhD in Chemistry from the Arizona State University in 1996. Since then, he has been working on various topics in the fields of crystallography, materials science, solid state chemistry, condensed matter physics, and applied mineralogy. He has served as a board member of various scientific meetings and review panels. Currently, he is a Chair of the Special Interest Group on Crystallography of Functional Materials (SIG#12) of the European Crystallographic Association.

Dr. Sci. Nadezhda Bolotina was graduated from the Moscow State University of Education as a mathematician and started as an engineer in the Shubnikov Institute of Crystallography of Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, creating new algorithms and software for the X-ray and neutron diffractometers. Since then, her scientific interest is invariably concerned with advanced techniques of the crystal structure analysis giving new possibilities to investigate the crystal growth structure properties relationship. Her PhD (1995) and DSc (2007) were obtained from the Shubnikov Institute of Crystallography in field of crystallography and crystal physics. To date, she is the leading researcher of the Shubnikov Institute of Crystallography; the chair of Commission on Aperiodic Crystals of Russian National Committee for Crystallography. For the last ten years she has been working as the co-editor of the IUCr journal Acta Crystallographica Section B: Structural Science, Crystal Engineering and Materials. She was a member of Commission on Aperiodic Crystals of International Union of Crystallography (IUCr), a member of Organizing and Programming Committees; the chair and co-chair of a number of the workshops and microsymposia of various crystallographic meetings.

Dr. Bharat Bhushan received an M.S. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971, an M.S. in mechanics and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1973 and 1976, respectively, an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy, NY in 1980, Doctor Technicae from the University of Trondheim at Trondheim, Norway in 1990, a Doctor of Technical Sciences from the Warsaw University of Technology at Warsaw, Poland in 1996, and Doctor Honouris Causa from the National Academy of Sciences at Gomel, Belarus in 2000 and University of Kragujevac, Serbia in 2011. He is a registered professional engineer. He is presently an Ohio Eminent Scholar and The Howard D. Winbigler Professor in the College of Engineering, and the Director of the Nanoprobe Laboratory for Bio- & Nanotechnology and Biomimetics (NLB2) and affiliated faculty in John Glenn College of Public Affairs at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. In 2013 to 2014, he served as an ASME/AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow, House Committee on Science, Space & Technology, United States Congress, Washington, DC. His research interests include fundamental studies with a focus on scanning probe techniques in the interdisciplinary areas of bio/nanotribology, bio/nanomechanics and bio/nanomaterials characterization and applications to bio/nanotechnology, and biomimetics. He is an internationally recognized expert of bio/nanotribology and bio/nanomechanics using scanning probe microscopy, and is one of the most prolific authors. He is considered by some a pioneer of the tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage devices. He has authored 8 scientific books, 90+ handbook chapters, 800+ scientific papers (h index 76+; ISI Highly Cited Researcher in Materials Science since 2007 and in Biology and Biochemistry since 2013; ISI Top 5% Cited Authors for Journals in Chemistry since 2011), and 60+ technical reports. He has also edited 50+ books and holds 20 U.S. and foreign patents. Michal Sabat (Biography)
Michal Sabat received his PhD in chemistry from the University of Wroclaw, Poland, in 1976. He started his postdoctoral work with Professor James Ibers at the Department of Chemistry, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, in 1980 and followed with a postdoc with Professor Muttaya Sundaralingam at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI. In 1983, he was offered a senior research scientist position at the Italian National Research Council (CNR) laboratory in Florence, Italy, where he worked with Dr. Carlo Mealli. In 1986, he returned to Northwestern University as a faculty member in charge of X-ray crystallography and molecular modeling. In 1990, he started a position at the Department of Chemistry, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, to become Director of the Molecular Structure Laboratory. In 2010, he joined the Nanoscale Materials Characterization Facility (NMCF) at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Virginia, to become the lead of the Applied X-Ray Science section.

His research interests span from X-ray crystallography to various methods of applied X-ray science, including: powder diffraction techniques, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. He has also performed extensive quantum chemical calculations on several metal-containing biological systems in collaboration with Professors Pavel Hobza and Jiri Sponer of the Czech Republic, as well molecular modeling of protein-drug interactions.
